What a still point is
Everything that turns, turns around a point that holds still.
You already know several. The top of a breath, before it turns. The beat in a room after somebody says something true and nobody rushes to fill it. The half-second between reading the message and starting to type.
It isn't calm. Calm is a mood, and moods can't be scheduled. A still point is just a gap — small enough to fit inside five seconds, wide enough to stand in.
It isn't made, either. It's found. It was in you before there was a coin at all.
Why the gap is worth anything
When you're handed two options and both are wrong, the problem usually isn't that you chose badly. It's that the choice arrived already shaped, and you answered at the speed it was asked. Take it or leave it. Fight or fold. All in or all out. Whoever framed it that way got to keep the frame.
The third option tends not to show up mid-swing. It shows up in the gap. That's the whole reason to practice making one — not to become serene, but to stop answering questions in the shape they were handed to you.
None of this is new. Every culture that has ever existed found its own way here. Dervishes spinning until the spinning went still. Quakers sitting in silence until the light moved someone to speak. A farm kitchen gone quiet for grace. Not one tradition's property — closer to standard human equipment, arrived at independently, everywhere, for as long as there have been people.
So nothing below is invented. It got crowded out, that's all; there is always something asking for the gap, and lately the things asking are very good at it. This is just the practice, written down plainly enough to keep.
The practice itself
Three units, each one teachable in a breath.
The Still Point
Thumb on the touchstone — or any pebble, any worry bead, any object with some weight to it. One slow breath. Notice one real thing in the room: something you can name, something that's actually here. Five seconds. That's the whole practice. Every coin already teaches it; this is where it gets named.
The Sit
Five minutes, once a day. No app, no streak counter, no check-in. You don't report to anything. This is the one wellness practice that never measures you — which is the point, and which is why it's harder than it sounds.
The Still Hour
An hour together. Phones in a bowl. Something made by hand — bread, music, mending, anything that puts your body in the work. One round of "name one tension." No leader, no agenda past that, no permission needed to hold one. That paragraph is the whole format — you have everything you need to run one tonight.
Why we hold our own keys
Every story of waking up — the cave, the dome, the endless feed — has the same structure: the operators offer two exits, and both exits are framed by the operators. The third way isn't picking a better exit. It's owning the ground you stand on.
That's why this runs on software we host, coins we make ourselves, and materials anyone can fork. A room someone else owns can change the rules on you. This one can't.
What this is
StillPoint began as a story — a novel about people relearning how to be still in a world built to keep them moving. From the start it was made in the open, as a collaboration between a human and AI, and it never pretended otherwise. In a project about finding a humane way to use these tools, hiding how it was made would have been the only real lie.
The story was the proof. This is where the proof becomes a practice you can join.
Not a pyramid — nothing here is trying to scale you, harvest you, or rank you. Something more like a tipi: small, portable, communal, yours to take down and carry whenever you're ready to go somewhere else.
What you're not signing up for
- No guru. No one here has the answer you're supposed to follow.
- No hustle, no funnel, no growth target. Presence isn't a metric.
- No purity test. Skeptics, builders, and the unsure are all the right kind of person.
This is small, and it's just beginning. That's the honest state of it.
Your first move
One thing, and it's not a task:
Come in, say who you are, and name one tension — the place you feel the pull between the pyramid and the tipi. Where the tools tempt you toward the extractive version, and where you'd rather build the humane one. No deliverable. Just honesty, out loud, where someone can meet it.
That's how everyone starts. It's how we find each other.
Take the pattern
Take it. Run your own Still Hours, hand out your own coins, change what doesn't work. You don't need permission, and eventually you shouldn't need to come back here at all — the three practices above are short enough to carry in your head, which is the point of keeping them short.
Movement materials here are shared under CC BY-SA, so anything that does get written down is yours to copy and adapt.
No worksheet, no kit, no download. There isn't one yet, and the practice doesn't wait on it.
